BALTIMORE, Sept. 15 Martin Abeloff, an authority on the treatment of breast cancer and chief oncologist at Johns Hopkins, died of leukemia Friday in Baltimore at age 65.
Abeloff was the director of the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center the past 15 years.
The Washington Post said Saturday his leukemia, a form of cancer, was generally slow growing, but his condition had worsened this past spring.
"Marty was that iconic Hopkins physician, scientist, educator, leader and good citizen rolled into one," Edward Miller, dean and chief executive of Johns Hopkins Medicine, told the Post.
Abeloff's list of accomplishments included: past president of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, past chairman of the Oncology Drugs Advisory Committee of the Food and Drug Administration and past chairman of the Board of Scientific Counselors to the National Cancer Institutes' intramural division of clinical sciences.
Survivors include his wife Diane and two daughters.
