The media in both the US and Argentina was abuzz with the news that one of President Bush's daughters had her purse stolen in Buenos Aires. The incident was reported to have happened with the Secret Services standing close by.
President Bush's twin daughters Barbara and Jenna were on a private visit to Argentina during the weekend. They were dining in a Buenos Aires restaurant in the popular tourist destination of San Telmo when the incident is supposed to have happened.
A pair of thieves managed to take the purse from under the table while the Secret Service agents stood at a distance. The purse is alleged to have contained her mobile phone as well.
There has been no official confirmation of the issue. The Argentine police have told the Associated Press that they have no official record of any such complaint. The US Embassy in Buenos Aires, the White House, Secret Service and the State Department has all refused to make any comment.
Initially the newspapers had not named which of the twins lost her purse. Later some newspapers stated that Barbara Bush was robbed of her purse.
However CNN did make reference to a law-enforcement source who claimed that the twins were at no point out of sight of the agents and were never at any risk of harm.
Meanwhile one news agency mentioned the attempted mugging of a Secret Service agent preparing for the arrival of the Bush twins.
