SAN JOSE, Calif., Sept. 12 Office Depot Inc. will pay $2.3 million to settle claims California customers were overcharged by faulty checkout scanners, prosecutors said Wednesday.
The Delray Beach, Fla., supplier of office products and services also agreed to participate in price-check programs to ensure customers were charged the right amount, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. The company did not admit any wrongdoing.
Office Depot also will pay nearly $286,000 to prosecutors in nine California counties, including Los Angeles, for their investigation costs, officials said. It will also offer $5 coupons to customers, good for in-store purchases, officials said. The coupons will be available in a Sunday newspaper ad circular in the next few months.
Finally, Office Depot agreed to offer a $5 refund if a customer is overcharged, prosecutors said.
