The parents of a missing British 4-year-old Sunday left Portugal, one day after saying they would stay until their names are cleared or their child is found.
Gerry and Kate McCann, both 39, returned to England after police said they had been formally identified as suspects in the May 3 disappearance of their daughter, Madeleine.
"While it is heartbreaking to return to the (United Kingdom) without Madeleine, it does not mean we are giving up the search for her," said Gerry McCann after he and Kate McCann landed at an airport in England, The New York Times reported. "We have played no part in the disappearance of our lovely daughter."
McCann said he and his wife had official permission to leave Portugal.
Madeleine was 3-years-old at the time of her disappearance from the family's vacation apartment in Praia da Luz in Portugal's Algarve.
The McCanns have told family friends the police believe Kate McCann accidentally killed Madeleine and then, with her husband's help, hid her body and moved it later using their rented car, the BBC reported.
The McCanns were questioned separately by police last week, but have not been charged with a crime.
