Dhaka, Sep 7 - Eminent Bangladeshi jurist Kamal Hossain has supported the caretaker government's drive against corruption, which has led to the arrests of former prime ministers Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia, saying that 'no one is above the law'.In an oblique reference to the arrests of the two leaders, he said: 'Trial of the arrested people should be held in accordance with the investigation report.'While Awami League chief Hasina has been in jail on corruption charges since July 16, Bangladesh Nationalist Party's Zia was jailed last Monday.Hossain said: 'People are closely watching what steps the parties take on their leaders.'According to political analysts, his support to 'trial in accordance with the investigation report' is significant in view of the two women rejecting outright the charges against them.Hossain, who was the foreign minister in the first government of independent Bangladesh, has been associated with the Awami League, but in recent years developed differences with Sheikh Hasina. He heads the Gono Forum, a party that was part of the 14-party alliance that Hasina headed till January this year.He has been perceived as being among the key advisors of the present government that took office amidst political turmoil. National emergency followed.Hossain had said before declaring emergency that there was no rule of law. 'Steps are on to restore rule of law. Now we are in a process of electing honest, qualified and efficient candidates in polls,' he was quoted as saying in The Daily Star Friday. (c) Indo-Asian News Service
