Democratic fundraiser Norman Hsu, who was a fugitive from justice, has been arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Colorado on Thursday. Hsu was arrested at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction.
Pete Smarr, a nursing supervisor at St. Mary's Hospital confirmed that Hsu was arrested, but declined to say why he was in the hospital.
Hsu had surrendered before the San Mateo officials last week and had posted a bond of $2 million. He was due to appear on Wednesday to surrender his passport to the court, but he never turned up. That started off a manhunt and Hsu was finally nabbed at Colorado.
Hsu has acquired quite a reputation as a star fundraiser for the Democrats It is reported he raised $100,000 for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's presidential bid. He also raised funds for campaigns being run by Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., and New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson.
The candidates are either returning the money or are giving away the contributions to charities.
Hsu's case dates back to 1991 when he had pleaded guilty to charges of theft in San Mateo. It was alleged that he had defrauded investors out of $1 million in a scheme. He was due to be arrested in 1992, but disappeared only to appear in 2002 as a owner of a successful business.
In 2003 he became the Democratic Party's star fundraiser and also donated thousands of dollars to the party.
