SANTA CLARA, Calif - Nvidia has announced the release of two new products for PCs that have the potential to convert the average PC into a top gaming platform. The GeForce 8800 graphics-processing unit (GPU), and the nForce 680i SLI media and communications processor (MCP) are designed to run exclusively on Intel Core 2 Quad and Core 2 Duo processors.
The GeForce 8800 GPU is the world's first unit to complement Microsoft's Direct X 10, which is slated to be available with the new operating system Windows Vista. The GeForce 8800 GPUs boast of a number of unique features like 128-parallel, 1.35GHz stream processors and Nvidia's Quantum Effects physics processing technology.
The company worked with the world's top game designers during GeForce 8800's development process, thus enabling it to showcase some awesome games like Crysis, Hellgate: London, World in Conflict, Company of Heroes, Microsoft Flight Simulator X, and Age of Conan at the unveiling of the GPU.
"We set out to build the ultimate platform for PC gaming and high- definition video," said a statement by Jen-Hsun Huang, president and CEO at NVIDIA. "There is no better way to experience Windows Vista, DirectX 10, HD-DVD, and Blu-ray than with a PC powered by GeForce 8800 and nForce 680i SLI."
The other product is the Nvidia nForce 680i SLI MCP, which is designed to work in conjunction with Intel Core 2 Quad and Core 2 Duo-based PCs. Nvidia said that the nForce 680i SLI MCP is a motherboard solution that provides support for NVIDIA SLI multi-GPU technology.
