After two years of nasty headlines and two sons, pop star Britney Spears has decided that she could take her husband Kevin Federline's wayward ways no more. Citing the Hollywood favorite line of 'irreconcilable differences', the 24-year-old Baby, One More Time star filed for divorce in Los Angeles Superior Court on Tuesday.

According to reports, Spears has hired Laura Wasser to represent her and is seeking the 'legal and physical' custody of her sons with Federline - one-year-old Sean Preston and newborn Jayden James. The development comes one day after Spears appeared on The Late Show With David Letterman to flaunt the svelte figure she regained after the birth of her second son. The singer seems all set to regain her music career as well, with plans for a new album in the offing. According to sources, the album will be out next year.

The divorce filing brings to a close two whole eventful years for Spears. The singer, who is believed to have separated from her husband on Monday, married Federline in September 2004, even though his then girlfriend Shar Jackson was pregnant with the couple's second child. This was Federline's first marriage and the second for Spears, the first being to her childhood friend Jason Allen Alexander that lasted only 55 hours.

In April 2005, she announced her first pregnancy and son Sean Preston was born September 14, 2005. Cracks started appearing in Spears' marriage to Federline when he started leaving her to take care of the baby to enjoy night outs with his bachelor friends.

Meanwhile, the paparazzi had a whale of a time bashing the singer for her childrearing skills when Sean Preston fell down once and was photographed another time being driven by his mom while on her lap. Federline on his part acquired the reputation of living off his wife. Nevertheless, the couple got pregnant a second time and son Jayden James arrived on September 12 this year. Between all this, Spears' high profile career continued sliding downwards.

Federline's partying ways continued amid rumors of acrimony between him and his wife, even though he credited her with helping him during the making of his first hip-hop album Playing With Fire. “(Spears') influence on me has been really big. She's a strong woman and she knows what she wants out of life and that helps build a strong man. I look up to you baby,” he recently said in an interview. He even claimed his family came first and he was willing to give it all up to play daddy to his children.

Spears, however, steered clear of Federline's album launch party and was also seen without her wedding ring on the Letterman show. But she did not give any indication that the dissolution of her marriage was on the cards. Earlier, the singer had written a poem on her Web site which seemed to be bashing Federline for her fall.

It is believed that the couple has a prenuptial agreement. Details of the divorce settlement are also not clear yet but it is clear that the singer wants the custody of the couple's two children. Federline shares two other children, Kori and Kaleb, with actress Shar Jackson.

Both Spears and Federline are yet to release an official statement on the development.
