FALLON, Nev., Sept. 5 The Civil Air Patrol resumed searching for adventurer Steve Fossett in western Nevada Wednesday after he took off in a small plane and vanished.
The 63-year-old who holds various aviation accomplishments took off Monday afternoon from an airstrip at hotel magnate Barron Hilton's Flying M Ranch in perfect weather, CNN reported.
Maj. Cynthia Ryan of the Civil Air Patrol said 10 aircraft were scouring about 600 square miles of terrain for the single-engine, Citabria Super Decathlon that had enough fuel for 4-5 hours of flying, the report said.
Ryan said the plane's emergency locator beacon hadn't been deployed.
Fossett was reportedly heading out to scout potential salt flat sites for his planned bid to set aland speed record. He holds such aviation titles as being first to fly around the globe solo in a balloon and flying around the globe solo without refueling.
