PANAMA CITY, Sept. 5 Panama has begun work on a more than $5 billion expansion of the Panama Canal that is to be completed by 2014.
The effort to improve the canal linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans is the largest and costliest in its history.
Monday's ceremony kicking off the expansion was attended by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, La Prensa reported Tuesday.
The Panama Canal was returned to Panama by the United States in 1999.
