Owen Wilson is "doing well" after a reported suicide attempt, according to director Wes Anderson. Wilson was forced to pull out of the Venice Festival where his new film The Darjeeling Limited is being premiered.
The actor chose to recover at his California home instead. "Obviously he has been through quite a lot this week," said Anderson. "I can tell you he has been doing very well; he has been making us laugh."
Anderson and Wilson were joint nominees for the Academy Award for best original screenplay for The Royal Tenenbaums. That nomination was in 2002 and Anderson is also due to direct Wilson in a forthcoming comedy. It is unclear what the status of the film is following Wilson's suicide attempt.
"He wishes he could be here in Venice with all of you now. We all miss having him here with us," Anderson told reporters. "In the meantime, I would like to ask you to help us to protect his privacy and to respect his wishes."
Wilson, who has films like Wedding Crashers, Starsky & Hutch and Zoolander to his credit, stars in The Darjeeling Limited, which tells the story of three brothers who journey across India in order to heal their fragile relationship. The film also stars Adrien Brody, Jason Schwartzman and Bill Murray.
