LONDON: The British government is relaxing the three-month-old restrictions on items that can be carried aboard by passengers in flights originating from the country's airports.
Passengers will be allowed to carry small bottles of toiletries in transparent, resealable, plastic bags, the department for transport said. The relaxations come into effect Monday.
Baggage rules were made stricter at major British airports in August after a plan to blow up aircraft in midair was detected and thwarted. The curbs came to be relaxed in a gradual manner, but the ban on carrying liquids in cabin baggage continued as the alleged terrorist plan involved use of liquid chemicals to blow up the aircraft.
The latest relaxation, applicable throughout European Union, will allow passengers to carry small quantities of liquids (up to a maximum of 100 milliliters) in separate containers. The containers must be brought to the airport security in a single, transparent, resealable plastic bag no more than a liter in capacity. Current rules with regard to medicines and baby foods will continue to be followed.
