Berlin - Taiwan-based computer manufacturer Acer has joined the Blu-ray camp in the technology dispute over a successor to the DVD data storage and movie disc, a Blu-ray official said in Berlin Thursday. Speaking a day before the opening of the six-day IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin, Sony executive David Walstra said: "Now that Acer supports us, the four principal personal computer makers back our format: Hewlett Packard, Dell, Acer and Lenovo."

Walstra is deputy chairman of the European Blu-ray Disk Association. Sony leads the Blu-ray camp, which is opposed by the HD DVD movement with Toshiba and Microsoft as principal backers. Both sorts of disc can store a complete high-definition movie.

Since the introduction of Sony's PlayStation 3 gaming console in March, sales of Blu-ray movie discs in Europe had led those of the rival format by a 3:1 ratio, Sony executives told reporters at IFA.

The PlayStation can be used as a movie player.
