PAGUDPUD, Philippines, June 3 A Japanese man wants to be the first to kayak all the way from the Philippines to Taiwan, the Kyodo News Service reported.

Satoru Yahata, 31, of Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, embarked Sunday on his journey -- leaving from the tip of the main Philippine island of Luzon. His destination is Hualien in eastern Taiwan.

Yahata said he hopes to finish his trip within a month.

"Most people say it is very dangerous to cross this area by kayak," said the Tokyo-born Yahata. "But I want to do it just like people did in the past."
