Beirut - The
United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Michael Williams, was quoted Friday as saying that the imminent verdict from Special Tribunal for
Lebanon on the 2005 assassination of Rafik Hariri "may affect Lebanon's stability."
The Special Tribunal for Lebanon was set by the United Nations in 2007 to try suspects in the car bomb assassination of former premier Hariri.
Williams added, in remarks cited by the Lebanese press, "We are trying to calm the situation and deal with the facts," repeating that the UN body was an independent entity.
His comments came after Hezbollah Chief Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah warned last week that he will not accept any indictments by the tribunal which accuse members of his group in the Hariri murder case.
Media reports in Beirut indicated that UN prosecutor Daniel Bellemare will first indict in September "three to five members of Hezbollah, and in the second round about 20 with various ranks, including some key officials."
