Berlin -
Germany is to offer
asylum to Iranian dissidents who fear persecution if they return to their country, a government spokeswoman said on Monday. "The government is observing the
human rights situation in
Iran with great concern," the interior ministry spokeswoman said, adding that Germany aimed to show a "sign of solidarity."
For this reason, Germany had agreed to offer asylum to Iranian dissidents in a number of individual cases, coordinated with the United Nations' refugee agency, UNHCR.
The spokeswoman declined to give details of individuals, or say how many Iranians would be permitted to stay in Germany.
