Nairobi/N'Djamena - A French employee of the International Committee of the Red Cross has been released in
Chad after 89 days in captivity, the international humanitarian organization said Saturday. Laurent Maurice, who was said to be tired but in good health, was kidnapped in eastern Chad, close to the Sudanese border, in November as he was evaluating a recent harvest.
"The ICRC is relieved that Laurent is now free, and happy that he will soon be back with his family and friends," Jordi Raich, the head of the ICRC's delegation in Sudan, said in a statement.
"We would like to express our profound gratitude to all those who helped us in one way or another during his captivity."
Another ICRC employee Gauthier Lefevre, who was kidnapped in the restive Sudanese province Darfur in October, is still being held.
The ICRC said it was concerned about his
safety and was pressing for his release.
